Conservation support during Human Zoo
Project
Chimpanzee Overview Adelaide Zoo has managed Chimpanzees in the existing
enclosure for many years. Currently we have a related group of one male and 2
female. However, in autumn of 2007 this area is to be demolished, making way
for our new Environmental Education Centre. We want to build our Chimpanzee a
new home.
Global Issues Until recent times, 25 of Africa's
countries had Chimpanzee populations within their borders. Today, Chimpanzees
are found in only 21 African countries The Bushmeat crisis is the most
significant immediate threat to the future of chimpanzee populations in Africa.
The scale of the illegal, commercial hunting (Bushmeat) and trade now occurring
in Africa, is unsustainable. This commercial-scale trade threatens the survival
of numerous species.
